Spermidine: Insights into one of the most important polyamines

Table of contents

Spermidine, a biogenic polyamine, is considered to be one of the most important amino acid compounds and is becoming increasingly important for doctors, but also for people interested in health. However, very few people know what this compound is all about, what it can have a positive effect on in the human body and for whom appropriate supplementation could be useful.

Spermidine: An explanation

Scientists first discovered the compound spermidine back in the 1970s – at that time in its natural occurrence – in male semen. It then took around 30 years of research before Austrian researchers were able to attribute a promising, life-prolonging effect to the compound of important amino acids. Today, scientists even agree that an appropriate concentration of spermidine in the body is able to trigger the process of cell cleansing (autophagy). Many of you are probably already familiar with this from fasting. If this process works automatically or is consciously triggered by prolonged periods of fasting, you can enjoy a healthy and resilient body. Because the natural concentration of spermidine in the body decreases with age as metabolic processes slow down, the cells have less and less of the natural spermidine with increasing age. A reason to consciously add it to your body – at least if you want to stay healthy and agile in the second half of your life.

How does spermidine work?

As already briefly outlined, spermidine has an increased effect on the autophagy process in the body. Thanks to the polyamine, human cells are able to cleanse themselves and break down old, damaged cell components that could otherwise degenerate and simply become dangerous. Functioning autophagy therefore keeps the entire organism healthy and resilient and ensures a long, healthy life. Conclusion: When consumed in sufficient quantities, spermidine effectively counteracts the ageing process and protects life and limb.

What are the side effects of spermidine?

Looking at current research and studies on spermidine, it is noticeable that there are no side effects even with higher supplementation of this amino acid compound. One possible reason why our body tolerates spermidine so well could be that it is able to produce the compound on its own in order to repair damaged body cells naturally. In addition, spermidine is present in every single cell in our body anyway, albeit in smaller quantities. It is therefore not a foreign substance.

Who should take spermidine?

Spermidine supplementation is suitable for anyone who wants to take responsibility for their own health and who wants to stop the ageing process and any cell degeneration in a sustainable and healthy way.

What does spermidine contain?

Spermidine is found in every living organism. In humans, animals and plants. Some foods contain more natural spermidine, others less. Generally speaking, a plant-based diet is the gold standard for an adequate supply of this valuable amino acid compound. Wheat germ, mushrooms and bean sprouts in particular provide the body with a high quantity of valuable, bioavailable spermidine.

What is the daily requirement for spermidine?

This is certainly a question that needs to be considered individually. Nevertheless, there are some trend-setting ideas that we would like to share with you at this point. Researchers assume that you should consume 80 µmol (micromoles) of spermidine per day in order to be able to generate a life-prolonging effect. A diet that provides less than 60 µmol (micromoles) of spermidine per day is referred to as a low-spermidine diet. By comparison, people who do not pay attention to their spermidine intake usually consume 7 to 15 µmol (micromoles) of spermidine per day. In general, however, it is important to eat a healthy and nutritious diet. In addition to the intake of spermidine itself, it is also important to avoid foods that can inhibit autophagy. Meat or sausage products are among these foods. As a rule of thumb, the more plant-based your diet is, the better and healthier it is for your entire body.

Where can you buy spermidine?

Of course, it is also possible to take synthesized spermidine in high concentrations. It is possible to order the polyamine in various online stores. However, you should attach great importance to the quality of the supplement.

What is the price of Spermidine?

The prices of spermidine vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and from distributor to distributor. As a general rule, you pay a little more for natural and body-identical supplements than for lower-quality products. You decide what you are willing to invest in your health.

The dosage of spermidine

Even if the dosage should ultimately always be considered individually, there are guidelines on what an optimal dosage can look like. Especially when supplementing spermidine, a precise supply of the important substance can be monitored. Based on ten years of research, we would like to recommend the product spermidineLIFE to you. The recommended dose here is two capsules per day, each containing 1 mg of highly bioavailable spermidine.

Spermidine and our many years of experience

Extensive and conscientious research is required to assess whether dietary supplements of any kind have lasting benefits for humans. We have now been able to gather a decade of valuable experience in the field of the amino acid compound spermidine. We would like to share the information from all these years with you. So that as many people as possible can benefit from it. In addition to us, other researchers have also conducted intensive research into spermidine. Of course, we don’t want to withhold these results from you either.

What does spermidine do in the body?

Spermidine is able to stimulate autophagy in the human (or animal) body. This state, which can also be equated with cell cleansing, is usually only achieved by the body after a long period of fasting. This is why intermittent fasting is so popular nowadays. However, there are people for whom fasting of any kind is contraindicated. Spermidine capsules are a particularly good way of benefiting from the positive effect of autophagy. As part of the cell cleansing process, the body gets rid of all old or even degenerated cells. These are then excreted via the normal bodily processes. A sufficient amount of spermidine is essential to cleanse the body properly.

Study results about Spermidine experiences: What have they shown so far?

Spermidine has been the subject of intensive research for many years. We have taken a close look at published studies from various countries and summarized the results below for general information.

Study of Bruneck (1995-2015)

In this 20-year study, the focus was primarily on the lifestyle of the test subjects. In total, the lifestyle and state of health of 829 people in a municipality in South Tyrol were recorded. Every five years, the participants were asked about their nutritional situation. The evaluation was then carried out after 20 years. The research team found that people who supplied their bodies with spermidine through food lived between five and seven years longer than those who did not. Of the 829 test subjects who received spermidine, 341 died during the 20 years of research. A good 40 percent of the deceased consumed only a little spermidine. 24 percent had a moderate spermidine intake during the years of the study and only 15 percent died despite a high spermidine content in their diet. The researchers drew the following conclusions from this long-term study in South Tyrol:

  • A diet rich in spermidine protects against vascular and intestinal diseases.
  • Spermidine has a positive effect on the human nervous system and protects against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Spermidine also plays a decisive role in the development of tumors.
  • The more spemrmidine the test subjects consumed, the fewer cardiovascular diseases they suffered from.

A similar study carried out over 12 years in Salzburg came to similar results in the spermidine experience. More than 1000 people were observed.

Research by Frank Madeo, University of Graz

Frank Madeo was particularly interested in autophagy. Years ago, he and his team of researchers investigated the effect of autophagy on yeast cells and fruit flies and came up with astonishing results. When the fruit flies were given spermidine, it was observed that the nerve cells aged at a much slower rate. Shortly afterwards, a real effect was also observed in mice. When they were fed with the polyamine spermidine, they lived significantly longer and their heart vessels remained more elastic. As a result, the rodents’ kidney function also improved. Building on Madeo’s research results, further experiments with spermidine were carried out in various laboratories around the world. In Japan, for example, it was shown that the administration of spermidine is effective against inflammation in old age. Chronic inflammation in the blood was drastically reduced in mice that consumed spermidine.

In Italy, it has also been shown that spermidine may be able to heal the effects of a genetic muscle disease.

Smart Age Study by Charité Berlin (2015-2020)

In a five-year study, researchers at the University Hospital Berlin also found that spermidine-induced autophagy could even prevent neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. On this basis, it can generally be assumed that spermidine and other polyamines can have a positive effect on brain function and consequently also on a person’s mental abilities. The study included people who were already suffering from age-related memory impairment. However, none of them had Alzheimer’s disease. The test subjects were given spermidine capsules for three months at a time. At the end, it was shown that the subjects’ memory performance had subjectively improved. In addition, the spermidine obtained from wheat germ was well tolerated by all participants.

Is spermidine carcinogenic?

There is no evidence that spermidine could be carcinogenic. On the contrary: according to various research results, spermidine is even sustainably involved in the shrinking of tumors and even prevents them from developing in the first place. Nobody should therefore be afraid of supplementing with spermidine.

Can you lose weight successfully with spermidine?

Spermidine is also known as a calorie-reducing mimetic. As already mentioned, it automatically puts the body into a state of fasting when taken. While the body is engaged in cell cleansing, the metabolism is also running at full speed. As a result, a reduction in body weight is a welcome side effect.
