Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenol and pigment found in a variety of plants and foods that gives many fruits, vegetables and grains their characteristic red color. It has been discovered in more than 72 different plant species to date and has become known for its natural presence in red wine.
This polyphenol is particularly concentrated in the skins of red grapes and serves as a natural defense mechanism for the plant against parasites, fungal attack and difficult weather conditions such as humidity, UV radiation and temperature changes.
Resveratrol exists in two different geometric forms, the so-called isomers: Cis-resveratrol and trans-resveratrol. However, the full biological and physical properties of resveratrol are only brought to bear by the trans form. In comparison, cis-resveratrol is less common in nature than the bioactive trans-resveratrol.
