Understanding the NAD Test

NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is an essential coenzyme found in almost every cell of an organism. As a small organic molecule, it works together with enzymes to catalyse chemical reactions.

In its function as a catalyst in redox reactions, NAD transfers electrons from one compound to another. These reactions are essential for energy production at the cellular level. Understanding how the coenzyme NAD works in the body and how its concentration can be optimised when necessary is therefore important for maintaining health and quality of life.

We recommend carrying out an NAD Test before you begin taking NAD-supporting products. The test provides a baseline from which changes after taking the products can be tracked.

How does the NAD Test work?

You receive a test kit with detailed instructions and use a finger prick to collect several drops of blood onto a special dried-blood card. The card is then sent to a specialist laboratory to determine intracellular NAD levels.

In principle, both extracellular NAD fractions in plasma or serum and intracellular NAD fractions in blood cells can be measured. For cellular energy status, however, the intracellular NAD stores are particularly relevant. The NAD Test is designed so that the signal obtained from the dried-blood sample predominantly reflects the intracellular NAD content in the cells, thereby providing insight into the actual NAD status inside your cells, while purely extracellular fluctuations play a less significant role.

First register your test kit online, disinfect your fingertip and position the lancet as described. Allow several drops of blood to fall onto the marked areas of the dried-blood card, let the card dry completely and then send it to the laboratory in the enclosed return envelope.

Warm your hands well before collection so that the blood flows more easily, and do not touch the filter area of the card directly with your finger. The blood drops should completely and evenly saturate the marked circles. Allow the card to dry for several hours and only then package it as instructed to help preserve the stability of the NAD markers.

You can generally collect the blood sample at any time of day. Choose a time that reflects your normal daily routine and avoid unusual stressors immediately beforehand, such as very intense physical activity, an acute infection or heavy alcohol consumption, so that the measured NAD status is as representative as possible.

As a rule, you do not necessarily need to stop taking NAD-related supplements because the test is intended to measure your actual current NAD status. However, when you want to document a baseline before starting a new supplementation or treatment strategy, it may be useful to test before starting or after a stable period of use and to take this into account when interpreting the result.

In principle, you can take the test while continuing your medication. Because some medicines can influence energy metabolism and NAD-dependent processes, you should always mention all relevant medication when discussing the findings with a physician or another qualified professional.

Ideally, send your sample on the day it is collected or on the following business day so that transport and storage times remain as short as possible. Dried-blood samples remain stable for a limited period, but they should still be sent promptly to preserve the NAD content as effectively as possible.
