      The Omega-3 test kit is designed for straightforward sample collection at home. To perform the test, a few drops of capillary blood are placed on a dried-blood card, which is then sent to a specialised German laboratory whose analytical procedures meet the requirements of DIN EN ISO 15189 and are CE-marked.
    • Determination of fatty acid status using erythrocytes
      The measurement procedure is considered the gold standard in fatty acid analysis and is based on the standardised Omegametrix method for determining the HS-Omega-3 Index®, which was co-developed by Prof. Dr Clemens von Schacky and Prof. Dr W. S. Harris. The analysis measures fatty acids in the membranes of erythrocytes (red blood cells), making the individual fatty acid status and possible imbalances in the fatty acid profile visible.

      In the laboratory, 26 fatty acids in the membranes of the erythrocytes are analysed using GC-FID. The evaluation includes saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, including omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, omega-6 fatty acids including arachidonic acid, omega-7 and omega-9 fatty acids, as well as various trans fatty acids. Based on these results, parameters such as the HS-Omega-3 Index® and a trans-fat index are calculated.

    What are omega-3 fatty acids and why are they important? Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential for the human body but cannot be produced by the body itself. They occur primarily in fatty sea fish and certain plant foods.

    Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in the development and function of the brain as well as in cardiovascular health. Many people do not consume sufficient amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. This deficiency is particularly widespread in Western countries.

    Studies have shown that a higher omega-6 to omega-3 ratio may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Measuring your omega-3/6 ratio can therefore help you take steps to improve the balance of these fatty acids.

    People who already take omega-3 supplements can also use the Omega-3 Test to check their effectiveness and, if necessary, adjust their diet or supplementation accordingly. Measuring your omega-3 index is therefore an important step in assessing your individual fatty acid supply.

    How does the Omega-3 Test work?

    Yes, the Omega-3 Test is an at-home test that you can complete conveniently yourself. The kit includes detailed instructions and a small lancet for collecting a few drops of capillary blood from your fingertip. The drops are applied to a prepared dried-blood card, which is then sent to the specialist Omegametrix laboratory.

    Fatty acids are organic molecules and the primary building blocks of dietary fats. The body uses them to produce and store energy, as precursors to numerous metabolic intermediates and as essential components of cell membranes, where they help determine how effectively cells function.

    The test is primarily intended for adults who want to assess their levels of the marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. It is particularly useful if you eat little oily fish, take or plan to take omega-3 supplements, or want to evaluate your cardiometabolic profile and dietary habits using objective data.

    Yes. The neotes Omega-3 Test uses the original scientifically validated HS-Omega-3 Index® method developed by Prof. Clemens von Schacky and colleagues. It measures the percentage of the marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in red blood cells using the standardized method used in clinical studies and publications.

    The test kits generally remain usable for several months. The exact best-before date is printed on the packaging. Store the kit in a dry place at room temperature and use it no later than the stated date.

    The test kit contains everything required for sample collection: one or more blood-collection lancets, a prepared dried-blood or sample card, an alcohol swab, plasters, illustrated step-by-step instructions and return packaging for sending the sample to the laboratory.

    If required, activate your test kit online, disinfect your fingertip, prick the side of your finger with the lancet and apply several drops of blood to the marked areas of the dried-blood card. Allow the card to dry completely, place it in the protective sleeve provided and send the sample to the laboratory in the enclosed return envelope.

    Warm your hands thoroughly before collecting the sample, for example with warm water, to encourage blood flow. Do not touch the filter area of the card with your finger. The blood drops should completely and evenly saturate the marked circles. Make sure the sample card is fully dry before packaging it.

    You can collect the blood sample at any time of day. Ideally, choose a time that reflects your normal routine and avoid collecting the sample immediately after very intense physical exertion or heavy alcohol consumption, or during an acute illness, so that the result reflects your usual status as accurately as possible.

    You generally do not need to stop taking omega-3 supplements before the test, as the HS-Omega-3 Index® is intended to reflect your current omega-3 status. However, if you have only recently started taking an omega-3 supplement or want to document a baseline before starting a new supplementation or dietary strategy, it may be useful to schedule the test before you begin or after a period of consistent intake and take this timing into account when interpreting the results.

    Ideally, send the dried-blood sample on the day of collection or on the following business day. Although dried blood is relatively stable, transport time should still be kept as short as possible.

    Allow the blood card to dry completely, then store it in a dry, dark place at room temperature and away from direct sunlight. Send the sample as soon as possible, generally within a few days of collection, to maintain the quality of the analysis.

    The return address is pre-printed on the enclosed return envelope. Simply package the sample as described, place the dried-blood card securely in the protective sleeve and send the envelope by regular post; no additional address details are required.

    The test can generally be carried out while you are taking medication, as it primarily reflects the fatty acid status of your red blood cells. However, certain medications and medical conditions may affect how the results are interpreted. If you are unsure, discuss your situation with your doctor and mention any relevant treatments when reviewing the results.

    For returns from abroad, follow the enclosed shipping instructions carefully and, where required, declare the sample as a “dried-blood sample” or low-risk biological sample, as described in the instructions. Allow for longer delivery times and possible customs inspections, and send the sample as soon as possible after collection to maintain the quality of the analysis.

    Yes, you can collect the sample with the assistance of your doctor if they are willing to help. However, the test remains an at-home test, with the sample sent to a specialised laboratory. Any medical findings and possible next steps should then be discussed directly with your treating practice.

    The results report shows your HS-Omega-3 Index®—the proportion of the marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in your red blood cells—along with additional fatty acid parameters such as the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, the proportion of arachidonic acid (AA) and, where applicable, trans fatty acids. You will also receive an assessment against target ranges and general guidance on optimising your fatty acid intake in consultation with qualified professionals.

    The analysis shows the proportion of the marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA relative to other fatty acids and whether your HS-Omega-3 Index® falls within the target range. Based on this, you will receive guidance on whether your current diet and any supplementation appear sufficient or whether adjustments may be appropriate in consultation with qualified professionals.

    If you change your diet, alter your intake of oily sea fish, begin taking omega-3 supplements or adjust the dose, repeat testing can show whether your HS-Omega-3 Index® is moving towards the desired target range. This provides objective feedback on whether the measures you have taken to optimise your fatty acid intake are working in everyday life.

    The marine omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are considered the most biologically active omega-3 fatty acids and are relevant to numerous bodily functions, including heart, brain and cellular health. Their levels in red blood cells can vary considerably from person to person, which is why they are measured specifically as part of the HS-Omega-3 Index®.

    The HS-Omega-3 Index® indicates the percentage of the two marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA among the fatty acids measured in red blood cells. It was developed to provide an indirect measure of omega-3 status in important organs, such as the heart; the stated target range is approximately 8–11%.

    The HS-Trans Index® describes the percentage of selected industrial trans fatty acids, including trans-oleic acid and certain trans-linoleic acids, in red blood cells. A low value below approximately 1.04% is considered desirable because elevated levels of these trans fats have been associated with unfavourable health effects. 

    Using the Omegametrix method, 26 selected fatty acids are determined in a standardised manner, including various omega-3, omega-6, omega-7 and omega-9 fatty acids, saturated fatty acids and several trans fatty acids. This covers more than 99% of the relevant fatty acids in the membranes of red blood cells.

    Once your sample has arrived at the laboratory, the analysis generally takes around 10–14 days. As soon as the analysis has been completed, you will be informed and can access your results in a protected online area. 

    Your sample is processed in the laboratory using only a code; personal data such as your name and address are managed separately. The analysis is carried out using a quality-assured, standardised method, and online access to your report is provided through a protected platform that complies with the applicable data-protection requirements. 

    If you are making targeted changes to your diet or omega-3 supplementation, repeating the test after a few months may be useful to determine whether your HS-Omega-3 Index® and, where applicable, other fatty acid parameters have changed in the desired direction. The appropriate frequency of repeat testing depends on your goals and the assessment of the healthcare professionals involved.

    Yes. The report contains detailed, easy-to-understand explanations of the measured fatty acids and target ranges as well as general recommendations that are not related to treatment. You can also discuss your results at any time with your doctor or a qualified nutrition professional in order to relate them to other findings and your individual situation.
