What is arginine?

Arginine is one of the protein-forming amino acids used by the human body. It serves both as a building block for proteins and as a substrate for important endogenous compounds, especially nitric oxide.

Arginine is part of the nitric-oxide pathway and the urea cycle, where it helps the body dispose of toxic ammonia.

Where does arginine occur naturally?

Arginine is considered a conditionally essential amino acid. Under normal circumstances, the body can produce much of what it needs. During growth, severe illness, injury or major metabolic stress, demand may exceed endogenous production.

What is arginine’s primary function?
