To carry it out, a buccal mucosa sample is placed in a sample tube, which is then sent to a specialised German laboratory certified to ISO 9001:2015 and analysed genetically there.

      Longevity-associated genes influence how cells deal with burdens, repair damage and regulate metabolic processes. Selected genetic variants in these genes describe an individual biological baseline without determining lifestyle. On this basis it can be estimated in which areas protective and repair programmes tend to be more robustly configured and where there may be a higher sensitivity to lifestyle and environmental factors – in other words, how your own longevity-relevant systems are fundamentally "set up".

      In the laboratory, selected DNA segments in longevity-associated genes, including SIRT1, FOXO3A, FTO, TP53, TEP1 and APOE, are examined using established molecular-genetic procedures. Since the respective genotype is genetically fixed, a single analysis in a lifetime is usually sufficient. The results classify your personal baseline in areas such as cellular stress response, DNA stability, telomere maintenance as well as lipid and brain metabolism.

      After a preliminary consultation, receipt of the sample and laboratory analysis, the longevity report is available after approximately three weeks.     Understanding the longevity gene test

    "Longevity genes" is a collective term for genes whose variants, such as single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), are associated in scientific research with biological processes that may potentially influence ageing, cell function and metabolism.

    Studies worldwide investigate how certain gene variants – for example in FOXO3, SIRT1 or APOE – are related to ageing processes and cellular mechanisms, including cellular stress responses, metabolic regulation or the maintenance of cell homeostasis. For example, it was found that certain variants of the FOXO3 gene occur more frequently in particularly long-lived people.

    In addition, genes involved in cell repair, energy and stress responses are considered. Such mechanisms could theoretically be relevant, especially in combination with environmental and lifestyle factors. In recent years, research has increasingly pursued polygenic approaches, in which several variants are analysed together in order to better represent genetic diversity.

    The term "longevity genes" provides scientific orientation: it names genetic variants that are studied in the context of ageing research. However, it does not provide a guarantee of healthy ageing, as many factors – including lifestyle, environment and chance – influence the ageing process.

    The Longevity Gene test is a genetic self-test that you can carry out conveniently at home following an initial consultation. You receive a test kit with detailed instructions and take a buccal (inner cheek) swab yourself, which is then sent to a specialist laboratory. 

    The Longevity Gene test examines genetic variants, that is, comparatively stable features of your DNA that are associated with healthy ageing and with long-term risk and protective factors, and which generally do not change over the course of your life. The bioAge test, by contrast, measures epigenetic patterns and other markers in the blood that are strongly influenced by your current lifestyle and that can shift over time through changes in diet, exercise, sleep or stress management. 

    The test is intended for adults aged 18 and over who would like to better understand their genetic predisposition for healthy ageing and a long-term prevention strategy. It is particularly relevant if you take a keen interest in longevity, prevention or optimising your lifestyle with a long, healthy life in mind. 

    The test kits generally remain usable for several months; you will find the exact best-before date on the packaging. Store the kit in a dry place at room temperature and use it no later than the stated date to ensure sample quality.​ 

    In the test kit you will find everything you need to collect your sample: one or more swabs for the buccal (inner cheek) sample, illustrated step-by-step instructions, labelling stickers and a return package for sending your sample to the laboratory.

    After the initial consultation, you take the buccal swab according to the instructions: rub the swab firmly against the inside of your cheek for the stated time, let it dry briefly and then place it in the tube or transport sleeve provided. You then package everything as described and send the sample to the laboratory using the enclosed return envelope. 

    Please follow the guidance in the package leaflet, particularly regarding eating, drinking, smoking or brushing your teeth before collecting the sample. As a rule, for a defined period beforehand you should not eat or drink anything (except water), should not smoke, should not use chewing gum or sweets, and should not touch the swab with your fingers or other surfaces. 

    Yes. Intensive oral hygiene immediately before sample collection can change the amount of cheek cells available and leave residues of toothpaste or mouthwash in the sample. For at least 30–60 minutes before the buccal swab, you should therefore not brush your teeth, not use mouthwash and not eat, drink (except small amounts of water) or smoke, so that the sample remains as unaltered as possible. 

    You can take the buccal swab at essentially any time of day. Ideally, however, choose a moment during your normal daily routine when you can comfortably observe the recommended intervals from eating, drinking, smoking and brushing your teeth.​ 

    Ideally, send your sample on the day of collection or the next working day, so that transport and storage times are kept as short as possible. If this is not possible, store the sealed sample at room temperature as instructed and send it within a few days. 

    Store the sealed sample in a dry place at room temperature, protected from direct sunlight and large temperature fluctuations. Send it as soon as possible to ensure optimal quality.​ 

    Yes, you can carry out the sample collection together with your doctor if they would like to support you. The test itself remains a self-test, with the sample sent to the specialist laboratory.​ 

    The Longevity Gene test analyses selected genetic variants that studies have associated with healthy ageing, lifespan and age-related processes. The results show which genetic factors are, for you, more likely to be favourable or potentially challenging, and where it may be worthwhile to pay particular attention to preventive strategies and lifestyle factors. 

    The results report presents your genetic variants for key longevity genes in a structured way and sorts them into easy-to-understand categories (for example, areas with more neutral, protective or potentially higher-risk profiles at the population-statistical level). In addition, you receive interpretive text and general, non-therapeutic guidance on which lifestyle areas may be worth paying particular attention to, in consultation with qualified professionals. 

    Once your sample reaches the laboratory, the analysis usually takes about 3 weeks. As soon as the report is ready, you will be notified and can view the result on the platform and, if you wish, discuss it with qualified professionals. 

    As this is a genetic test, the underlying hereditary information normally does not change over the course of your life. A Longevity Gene test that has been carried out correctly and can be evaluated therefore usually does not need to be repeated; retesting is only relevant if a sample cannot be evaluated for technical reasons or on the explicit recommendation of your doctor. 

    Your genetic data is processed under pseudonymisation, which means the laboratory works with a sample code rather than your name. The digital results report is provided via a secure platform, and data is processed in line with the applicable data protection and security standards.​ 

    An initial medical consultation is an integral part of the Longevity Gene test and is mandatory before it can be carried out. In this conversation, you and the doctor clarify together whether the test is suitable for your situation, which questions are most important to you and how a potential result would later be interpreted. 

    The consultation currently takes place in German. Further languages may be added in future; please do get in touch if you have a specific requirement. 

    By default, no additional medical discussion is required after the test result. You can, however, discuss your result with your treating doctor or, if you wish, book a separate Longevity consultation in which your results are explained in detail and possible next steps are discussed. 

    If you wish, you can also book a Longevity consultation. Here, your genetic test results are placed in the broader context of your lifestyle, further biomarkers and a long-term prevention and longevity strategy, so that you can plan concrete, practical measures for everyday life.

    Yes, you can also discuss your genetic findings with your GP or with specialist practitioners (for example in cardiology, preventive or anti-ageing medicine). Combining the genetic results with a clinical assessment allows for a well-founded, individual evaluation of your long-term health and prevention strategy.
