Pterostilbene is a naturally occurring plant compound belonging to the stilbene family. It is chemically related to resveratrol and occurs in small amounts in blueberries, grapes and the heartwood of certain trees.
Plants produce stilbenes as protective compounds in response to stress, infection or environmental damage.
Pterostilbene and resveratrol have similar molecular structures. Pterostilbene contains two methoxy groups, while resveratrol contains additional hydroxyl groups.
This structural difference makes pterostilbene more fat-soluble and may increase its oral bioavailability. It is often described as being absorbed more efficiently and metabolized more slowly than resveratrol.
Higher bioavailability does not automatically mean greater clinical benefit. Human evidence remains limited.
Laboratory studies suggest that pterostilbene can influence oxidative stress, inflammatory signaling and cellular defense pathways. It has been investigated in relation to transcription factors such as Nrf2 and signaling pathways involving NF-kB.
Most of this evidence comes from cell and animal studies. Clinical significance in humans has not yet been established.
Animal studies have examined pterostilbene in relation to blood glucose, insulin sensitivity, lipid metabolism and body weight.
Small human studies have produced mixed findings. Some have reported changes in blood pressure or cholesterol, while others have not demonstrated clear metabolic benefits.
Because pterostilbene can cross biological membranes relatively easily, it has been investigated in models of cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disease.
Preclinical studies suggest possible effects on oxidative stress and inflammatory processes in the brain. These findings do not establish it as a treatment for dementia or other neurological disorders.
Cell and animal studies have investigated whether pterostilbene can influence cell growth, apoptosis and tumor-related signaling. The doses used in these studies are often not comparable with normal dietary or supplement intake.
Pterostilbene should not be used as a substitute for cancer treatment.
There is no universally established supplement dose. Human studies have used varying amounts, often over relatively short periods.
