What is quercetin?

Quercetin is a plant compound belonging to the flavonoid family. It is one of the most common flavonoids in the human diet.

Plants use quercetin and related compounds as pigments and as protection against ultraviolet radiation, pathogens and environmental stress.

Quercetin is frequently discussed as a senolytic compound, especially in combination with the prescription drug dasatinib.

In cell and animal studies, this combination has reduced selected senescent-cell populations. Human research remains experimental, and dasatinib can cause serious adverse effects. Such combinations should never be used without specialist medical supervision.

Dosage and safety

Supplements commonly contain several hundred milligrams per day. Short-term use has generally been well tolerated.

Possible adverse effects include headache, digestive discomfort and interactions with medicines. Quercetin may influence drug-metabolizing enzymes and transport proteins.

People taking anticoagulants, antibiotics, immunosuppressants or other regular medicines should seek medical advice.
