Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino sulfonic acid found in many tissues of the human body. Unlike the amino acids used to build proteins, taurine occurs mainly in a free form. It is especially abundant in the brain, heart, muscles, retina and bile.
The body can produce taurine from the amino acids cysteine and methionine. It is also obtained from food, particularly fish, seafood, meat and dairy products.

Taurine is particularly important during early development. For this reason, it is added to many infant formulas, especially when the formula is intended to resemble the composition of breast milk more closely.
Taurine has been studied in relation to blood pressure, heart-muscle function and vascular regulation. Some clinical studies suggest that taurine supplementation may modestly influence blood pressure or selected cardiovascular markers.
These findings are promising but do not establish taurine as a treatment for cardiovascular disease. People with heart conditions should discuss any supplementation with their physician.
Taurine is frequently included in sports and energy products. Research has examined whether it can influence endurance, muscle function, recovery and oxidative stress.
Some studies report small improvements in exercise performance or reduced markers of muscle damage, while others find no meaningful effect. Results depend on dose, training status and study design.

Taurine is a naturally occurring compound with important roles in the nervous system, cardiovascular system, muscles and bile metabolism. It is scientifically interesting in the context of exercise and healthy aging, but more human research is needed before firm longevity claims can be made.
