Pantethine

What is pantethine?

Pantethine is a biologically active derivative of pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B5. It consists of two pantetheine molecules connected by a disulfide bond.

Pantothenic acid is required for the formation of coenzyme A, a central molecule in energy metabolism and the synthesis and breakdown of fatty acids.

How is pantethine related to vitamin B5?

The body can use pantothenic acid to produce pantetheine and coenzyme A. Pantethine provides a more advanced intermediate in this metabolic pathway.

Although pantethine is related to vitamin B5, it is not identical to standard pantothenic-acid supplements and has been studied for different potential effects.

Pantethine studies have used doses much higher than the normal dietary requirement for vitamin B5. Possible adverse effects include digestive discomfort, nausea and diarrhea.

Pantethine may influence blood lipids and could interact with medication. People taking anticoagulants, lipid-lowering drugs or other regular medicines should consult a physician before use.
