Coenzyme Q10, also called ubiquinone, is a fat-soluble compound found in almost every cell. The body produces it naturally, and it is also obtained in small amounts from food.
Its name reflects its widespread occurrence in living organisms. In humans, the predominant form has ten isoprenoid units and is therefore called Q10.
Coenzyme Q10 is a central component of the mitochondrial electron-transport chain. It transfers electrons between enzyme complexes and thereby helps generate ATP.
It also exists in a reduced form called ubiquinol, which can act as an antioxidant in lipid membranes and lipoproteins.

Coenzyme Q10 concentrations in some tissues may decline with age. Levels can also be affected by illness, nutrition and medication.
Statins inhibit an enzyme in the cholesterol-synthesis pathway that is also involved in endogenous Q10 production. This has led to interest in Q10 supplementation for statin-associated muscle symptoms.
Clinical trials have produced mixed results. Some report reduced muscle pain, while others show no clear benefit.
People taking statins should not stop treatment independently. Persistent muscle symptoms should be assessed medically because they may have several causes.
Coenzyme Q10 has been studied in people with heart failure. Some trials suggest possible improvements in symptoms or selected clinical outcomes when Q10 is added to standard treatment.
Evidence is not sufficient to replace established heart-failure therapy. Any use should be discussed with a cardiologist.
Ubiquinone is the oxidized form, while ubiquinol is the reduced form. Both can be converted into one another in the body.
Ubiquinol is sometimes marketed as being more bioavailable, especially in older adults. Product formulation, particle size and the presence of dietary fat also influence absorption.

Coenzyme Q10 is essential for mitochondrial energy production and also participates in antioxidant defense. It has selected clinical applications under investigation, particularly in cardiovascular medicine and statin-associated symptoms, but it is not a universal anti-aging treatment.
