What is alpha-lipoic acid?

Alpha-lipoic acid, also known as thioctic acid, is a sulfur-containing compound produced naturally by the body. It acts as a cofactor for several mitochondrial enzyme complexes involved in energy metabolism.

Alpha-lipoic acid exists in oxidized and reduced forms and can participate in redox reactions. It is therefore often described as an antioxidant.

What role does alpha-lipoic acid play in metabolism?

Alpha-lipoic acid is required by enzymes that help convert carbohydrates, fats and amino acids into usable energy. It is especially important in mitochondrial reactions such as the pyruvate dehydrogenase and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complexes.

Products containing stabilized R-alpha-lipoic acid are often marketed as having higher biological relevance, although product quality and stability vary.

Supplement doses commonly range from several hundred milligrams per day, depending on the intended use. Possible adverse effects include nausea, abdominal discomfort, headache, skin reactions and low blood sugar.

Alpha-lipoic acid may interact with glucose-lowering medication, thyroid medication and certain cancer treatments. People with diabetes, thyroid disease, pregnancy or chronic illness should seek medical advice before use.
