What is N-acetylcysteine?

N-acetylcysteine, usually abbreviated as NAC, is a modified form of the amino acid L-cysteine. It is widely known as a mucolytic medicine used to loosen thick mucus in respiratory conditions.

NAC is also important because it supplies cysteine, one of the three amino acids required to produce glutathione. Glutathione is a major intracellular antioxidant and plays a central role in cellular detoxification.

Where does NAC occur naturally?

NAC itself is produced synthetically and does not occur naturally in food. Cysteine, however, is found in many dietary proteins, including meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, nuts and seeds.

GlyNAC and healthy aging

Combinations of glycine and NAC, commonly called GlyNAC, are being investigated in older adults. The rationale is that glycine and cysteine may both become limiting for glutathione synthesis.

Small studies have reported changes in oxidative stress, mitochondrial function and selected metabolic markers. Larger controlled trials are required.

Dosage and safety

NAC supplements commonly provide several hundred milligrams per serving. Possible adverse effects include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort and an unpleasant sulfur-like odor.

NAC may interact with nitroglycerin, anticoagulants and selected medications. People with asthma, gastrointestinal ulcers, pregnancy, chronic illness or regular medication use should seek professional advice.
