Propolis

What is propolis?

Propolis is also known as bee glue or bee resin. Bees produce it from plant resins, wax, pollen, essential oils and salivary secretions.

It has traditionally been used externally for minor wounds, burns and cold sores and internally as a general immune-support product. More recent research has also examined possible applications in oral health and metabolic disorders.

Where does propolis come from?

The name propolis comes from Greek and can be translated as “in front of the city.” Bees collect resin from buds, bark and trees and use the finished material at the entrance and inside the hive.

Beekeepers harvest propolis from hive surfaces or special collection grids. Because its composition depends on local plants, climate and season, propolis cannot be reproduced as one identical synthetic product.

What function does propolis have in the hive?

Bees use propolis as a protective and sealing material. It helps them:

  • Seal cracks and openings
  • Line brood areas
  • Isolate foreign material
  • Limit the growth of bacteria, fungi and some viruses
  • Maintain a hygienic hive environment

Its biological activity is associated with phenols, flavonoids, aromatic acids, waxes and other compounds. Depending on origin, propolis may contain hundreds of different substances.

What does research show?

Laboratory studies have reported antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant and immunomodulating effects. Clinical evidence is strongest for selected topical and oral-health applications.

Studies have examined propolis in connection with:

  • Cold sores and genital herpes
  • Denture-related stomatitis
  • Periodontal inflammation
  • Minor wound healing
  • Oral Candida infections

Some trials found that propolis-containing topical products performed comparably with conventional treatments in specific settings. However, formulations differ greatly, which makes results difficult to generalize.

Propolis and the metabolic syndrome

Researchers are also investigating propolis in relation to blood glucose, lipid metabolism, oxidative stress and inflammation. Small clinical studies have reported potentially favorable changes in selected markers, but the evidence is not yet sufficient for treatment recommendations.

Variation in product quality

Propolis is a natural material whose composition changes according to geography and plant sources. This affects color, taste, concentration of active compounds and biological activity.

Quality products should therefore provide information about origin, extraction method and standardization. Laboratory testing for contaminants is also important.

Allergy risk

Propolis can trigger contact allergies. People who are allergic to bee products, balsams or certain plant resins may be at increased risk.

Possible reactions include redness, itching, swelling, eczema and irritation of the mouth or throat. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has warned that allergic reactions are not uncommon among people who handle or use propolis regularly.
