For decades, researchers have sought to identify the mechanisms that govern our biological clock. There is broad scientific consensus that metabolic rate plays an important role in this process. A lower metabolic rate may modestly extend lifespan. Through biohacking, we may be able to support our body's natural mechanisms that promote healthy aging.

Cellular Communication Regulates Longevity

Our cells contain specialized organelles that serve as energy producers and regulate metabolism. These organelles are known as mitochondria. They generate energy by using oxygen to metabolize nutrients. However, this process also produces free radicals. These molecules are associated with aging because they can attack and damage healthy cells.

Research has also shown that mitochondrial activity declines with age. Incidentally, this phenomenon is not unique to humans but has also been observed in several other species.

Living Longer Through Calorie Restriction

Fortunately, our bodies possess natural mechanisms that can reduce and repair cellular damage caused by free radicals. Studies of exceptionally long-lived individuals have shown that their DNA repair protein PARP functions particularly efficiently. Supporting these cellular repair mechanisms may therefore be aided by a sensible reduction in calorie intake.

Good to know: Intermittent fasting is an effective method of calorie restriction in which calories are consumed only within a defined eating window. These time windows can be adapted to individual lifestyles. However, fasting periods should generally not exceed 36 hours.

During fasting periods, the body is exposed to less oxidative stress while its internal cellular repair mechanisms become more active.

Endurance Training as a Fountain of Youth

It is well established that physical exercise supports cardiovascular health and helps maintain overall fitness and well-being. Scientific studies have shown that endurance training, in particular, provides significant anti-aging benefits. Resistance training can serve as an excellent complement. However, measurable effects at the cellular level require consistent physical activity and regular training.
