Have you ever wondered what the secret to a long and healthy life is? This secret lies behind a term that has been gaining increasing importance in recent years: “longevity”. Life expectancy in modern society continues to increase. In Germany, men live to an average age of 78.8 years, while women live to an average age of 83.5 years. Medical and technological progress, together with improved living conditions, is helping this figure continue to rise.
However, a long life is not necessarily healthy or free of symptoms. People are living longer, but they are also spending more years in poor health. We all dream not only of living for a long time, but also of remaining healthy and active. While lifespan describes the total number of years we live, healthspan refers to the number of years we spend in good health, free from disease and in good physical condition. Although life expectancy has increased worldwide, healthspan has not kept pace to the same extent.
Key finding: The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that a child born in Germany today will spend only around 71 (70.89) of an average 82 (81.72) years in good health – a loss of 11 years of quality of life. The difference between lifespan and healthspan is scientifically estimated at approximately 10–12 years.

This increasingly gives us the opportunity to influence our ageing process and bring our healthspan closer to our lifespan.
