One factor that has been studied intensively is low-grade or silent inflammation. Unlike acute inflammation, which causes noticeable pain, redness or swelling, silent inflammation can remain unnoticed for long periods.
Acute inflammation is an important protective response to injury and infection. It helps control pathogens and limit tissue damage. Silent inflammation, by contrast, may persist throughout the body and contribute to progressive tissue dysfunction.
Chronic low-grade inflammation is considered a risk factor for several age-related conditions, including type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease and coronary heart disease. It may also interfere with signaling pathways involved in maintaining muscle mass and physical resilience.
Pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory processes normally exist in a dynamic balance. With age, this balance may shift toward persistent inflammatory activity.
A diet rich in rapidly absorbed sugars and highly processed foods may contribute to this process. Visceral fat—the fat stored around internal organs in the abdominal area—is metabolically active and can release inflammatory signaling molecules.
The gut microbiome may also play a role. The microbial ecosystem of older adults often differs from that of younger people. Beneficial bacterial groups may become less abundant, while potentially unfavorable species may increase.
A diet based on fresh, minimally processed foods can support metabolic and immune balance. One useful strategy is to reduce rapidly absorbed carbohydrates and added sugar.
Sweets, pastries and sugar-rich snacks should not form part of the daily diet. Whole-grain versions of bread, pasta and rice generally provide more fiber and produce a slower rise in blood glucose.
Many industrially produced foods contain hidden sugar. Reading nutrition labels can help identify added sugars listed under names such as dextrose, maltose, maltodextrin, glucose-fructose syrup or fruit concentrate.
Cold-pressed plant oils such as olive oil and rapeseed oil provide mainly unsaturated fatty acids. A Mediterranean-style diet, in which olive oil is a major source of fat, is associated with favorable cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes.
Plant foods also provide flavonoids and other bioactive compounds. These substances are being studied for their antioxidant effects, their influence on inflammatory signaling and their interaction with the gut microbiome.
A balanced diet can include moderate amounts of high-quality carbohydrates, adequate protein and predominantly unsaturated fats. The exact proportions should be adapted to individual needs, activity level, age and medical conditions.
